What was your job in the military?
Quartermaster- I was in charge of ships' navigation and signaling.
What was the best part of serving in the military?
The best part of my service is honestly the friends and family you make. You go through a lot of hard times together which brings you closer. I also really enjoyed travelling the world, eating different foods, and being a part of many different cultures.
What does it mean to be a Veteran at UF?
Honestly being a Veteran at UF doesn't vary from being a regular student. Others seem to look up to you in a way; you are held to a higher standard. I'm happy that after my service I am able to succeed and not have to worry about the tuition required to attend UF.
How does your military experience affect your life today?
I really enjoyed the structure of the Navy. I almost need a schedule to keep me sane. I have also found myself to be a lot more of a clean freak. Overall, the Navy allowed me to grow and mature in a way I probably wouldn't have if I were to have stayed in Missouri.
BEST food you ate in the military?
That is a hard question. I would say that I most enjoyed the food while in Europe - in particular in Rhodes, Greece. Every place I went to had amazing food. I also really enjoyed the Japanese culture and food.
WORST food you ate in the military?
Fermented shark soup in Iceland.
Is there anything you want the UF campus and community to know about Veterans?
We are just normal students. Although some of us operate differently, we just want to be treated like everyone else… unless there is a Veterans discount. Sometimes we can be a little overwhelmed by crowds; we are used to small, tight-knit groups usually in our same rates while on the ship or command.
