This course is designed for faculty and staff at UF who want to enhance their ability to identify signs of student distress and provide appropriate support.

Through a series of interactive modules, participants will:

  • Examine the prevalence of stress and emotional distress among students.
  • Recognize behavioral signs of distress acquire strategies for connecting students with the necessary resources.
  • Real-life scenarios in this course allow participants to apply best practices in responding to students in distress.

Suicide Prevention & Education Training

The Counseling & Wellness Center offers an array of programs and services to support university students in developing skills to identify warning signs and symptoms of suicide and take proactive steps to connect themselves, or peers, to campus resources as needed. Two central programs utilized include Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) and LivingWorks SafeTALK training programs. Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)

QPR (for Question, Persuade and Refer) is 1-1.5-hour interactive training for suicide prevention. The course covers myths regarding suicide, warning signs, and how to inquire about suicidal thoughts. The course also includes an opportunity for questions and discussion. This training is available to faculty, staff, students, and organizations across the University of Florida campus. 

LivingWorks SafeTALK 

LivingWorks SafeTALK is a 3.5-4 hour training that equips people to be more alert to someone thinking of suicide and connect them with further help. In LivingWorks SafeTALK you will learn how to reach out to someone thinking about suicide and help them keep safe by promptly connecting them to further support. Your role as a connector is the main focus of this training, which features: 

  • Trainer presentations, facilitated discussion, and skills practice. 
  • Videos that illustrate what happens when signs of suicide are overlooked, and how you can contribute to safe outcomes when these signs are heard and addressed. 
  • Information about UF-and-Gainesville-specific resources 
  • Opportunities to further explore organizational applications of the training. 

A community resource person will be on hand at the workshop to support your safety and comfort.
